He wanted a partner who might be interested in living on a cruising sailboat- her online profile read “Just Add Water”. The rest is history. A good one.
Ode to a Good Old Boat:
This is a great pic of our old home, s/v “O Be Joyful”. We lived aboard her for five wonderful years, and were nearing the completion of our refit- We’d renewed her entire electrical system, from batteries to circuit panels, wiring, and fixtures. We’d redone the plumbing top to bottom, along with cabinets, countertops, refrigeration, etc. She was shaping up to be a comfy, seaworthy partner for our adventures, until Harvey came along…
The decision to move on from her was heartwrenching- the damage she sustained was not structural, but it was an extensive amount of high end woodwork, and to have taken it on would mean another couple of years stuck at the dock. We were ready to go sailing.
It is absolutely true that a boat has its own personality, and OBJ was our good friend and partner. I hope her new owner does well by her, and enjoys her as much as we did.
The photo was taken on the day before Harvey struck by Rockport photographer John Martell . He does wonderful work, and both his home and studio were destroyed in the storm. Please support him at https://www.johnmartellphotography.com/
